DP Therapy

How this all began:

There are three things that I'm sure of in this crazy world. One: I'm going to die. Not to sound morbid, but it's bound to happen. Two: I'm going to work with Matthew Balthrop again. And three: when we do work together again, someone's spleen will explode two weeks before the end of principle photography (silly Lawson). Making this movie was like going to war. No matter how much you prepare for it, you're going to get blood on yourself. Just make sure it isn't yours.

When I was first introduced to the original graphic novel, I was skeptical. Here was Matt, my best friend in the world, pressing what seemed to me to be a fruity, "important", independent comic by some chick named Terry about a lesbian and her naive, slightly overweight girlfriend, who had large breasts. "What's this thing about?" I asked.

"Friendship, and love." Matthew answered.

"No thanks."

"Take this piece of contemporary comic art! Read it's luminous story and realistically drawn characters! Read, you magnificent bastard, read!"

So, sparing his feelings, I took it. I started reading it's first pages. Then I laughed, out loud, on the very first page. This had promise. I took it home and jumped right in, reading the whole thing from beginning to end. And then I wept, openly, because I stubbed my toe running to the phone. After my tantrum, I dialed Matthew.

"I loved it." I declared.

"I know," he replied, "I know."

In reading through this, I realize that I come off as an insensitive jerk. I'm not. It's just that I always have a knee jerk reaction to things like this. When I hear the words "realistic" and "sensitive" and "friendship and love", I think "arrogantly presumptuous melodrama". But Terry Moore, who I later found out is in fact a man, got it right all the way through. And I feel dirty just for doubting it. Matt told me the ideas he had for the movie, and I agreed to be his DP (which is Director of Photography, not Double Penetration. This is the Internet, so I feel the need to make that clear). And thus, the adventure began...
