Unlocking the Cryptex
Posted May 22nd, 2006 by Matthew in CommentsHey all,
Went to see The DaVinci Code this weekend. I’m going to make this short and sweet. Well…as short and sweet as I can be. If you’ve read the book, and you liked it…well…the movie’s probably not going to be your thing. If you hated the book, and everything it represents, then hey…you might like this flick!
Okay, usually I’m not one of those people who is like, “Oh! The movie has to be just like the book! Wah, wah, wah!” No, that’s not really me, because I understand that things translate differently from page to screen. I don’t care that Spidey had organic web shooters, I understand that sometimes things need to change. However, when it comes to changing one of the core principles of the book…well…I get a little itchy.
If you haven’t read the book, don’t worry, I’m not going to reveal any of the twists. What I will tell you though, is that the book reveres the idea of the sacred feminine, of restoring the balance of power between the male and the female. The lead female character in the book, Sophie, is portrayed as very smart and essential to solving the overall mysteries.
How awful is it then, that the film’s team made the decision to strip all of that power and intelligence away from the character of Sophie, leaving her as the standard Hollywood damsel in distress? It’s really terrible how the character is handled and I hope the irony is not lost on people who have both read the book and seen the movie. And I hope that makes them angry. Because it is one of the most blatant examples of how Hollywood mistreats the female.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t see the movie…
Well, yeah. I am saying that you shouldn’t see the movie, because if you see the movie, it simply supports this misogyny in Hollywood.
Anyways, that’s all I’ll write for now. I have to go and tell Dave to put more titties in the new script. Mmmmm…breasts. They represent purity.
Let’s hear it for gratuitous nudity!!
